The establishment of chambers of commerce in the occidental countries dates backs to 1700’s. There were Ahki community , Turkish-Islamic guilds and associationsof tradesmen in Turkish society which had the same function with such organizations in the West .
As to our country , it was not until 1876 that such organizations came into being . Besides , the assembly of commerce and the assembly of agriculture were beginning to be
founded in the cities and towns as required by a decree dated 1923. According to the decision taken by the ministry of commerce , it was notified that a chamber of commerce would be set up , primarily in Salonica , Izmir, Aleppo and Bagdat Trabzon, Adana, Ankara, Edirne , Hadarendigar and Erzurum , and secondarily in Trabzon, Adana, Ankara, Edirne, Hadarendigar,Erzurum .
Since the trade committee turned out to be beneficial , it was submitted to the ministry of commerce in 1885 that a chair and members should have been designated in order to establish a chamber of commerce in Edirne .
It’s quite apparent that ECCI illustrated in ‘ Edirne annuals ‘ (dated 1939) was set up within the scope of aforementioned regulations. The annual dated 1901 includes in the names of the members of Edirne chamber and the commercial tribunal .However we could not find any explanation about the chamber , from that date up until the foundation of Republic which lasted 22 years on account of the Balkan War , Dardanelles War , Cihan War One , the wreckages and the emigrations .
On September the 27th ,1925 foundation of the chambers of commerce was adopted by the regulations which required traders to become official and compulsory members . Thus , the chambers that failed to organize for almost fourty years, grew into professional organizations which obligated the traders to be affiliated with the chambers . ECCI , founded by law , came into operation in the city later on . As for the present , our chamber which is the second to be founded after Istanbul chamber will maintain the desire of fulfilling the technological and contemporary enterprises , which has lately adapted the traders and industrialists , without delay . Besides , our chamber includes in 15 professional committees .
